Page Structure and Overview
Template Regions
Main regions
For every Cascade page on the Rowan template there are
- areas you can edit,
- areas you can edit but have a fixed position on the page,
- and areas you can move around and edit.
- (note: the left hand column is a special case that we will discuss elsewhere.)
Areas you cannot edit
- The topmost area or heading of all pages (containing the Rowan logo and global navigation) and the footer area of your pages are not editable and are part of your page template
- The left-hand column (containing your site navigation) is also not directly editable.
- However you can change it by changing your site structure. (see information on how to change your navigation)
Editable areas with a fixed position on the page
- Most pages at Rown have an optional banner at the top of the page followed by
- A fixed text area. This text area will always be here (though you may leave it empty, it will leave a space on your page).
Editable, movable sections
- The rest of your page is made of what we call "content sections." These are optional areas of your page that offer specialized layouts.

The Banner
The optional banner can be a rotating series of pictures or a single image.

- How to choose pictures for this area (all about aspect ratios )
The Main Text Area
This Banner area is followed by the fixed, plain, free text area (Example: this is the area where I'm explaining this on this page).
This text area has a text editor that allows basic web page formating with paragraphs, headings, lists and images. While there are no specific requirements here, you will be limited to basic formatting in order to keep your pages working in all devices and to be sure they fit in with other Rowan web pages. See the "adding text" information for help creating links, adding images and other general text editing chores.
If you decide not to fill this area with text, a small white area will appear at the top of your page before the first Content Section you add below it. Note: this page has a blank main content area and thus a space appears between the heading of the page and these accordion page sections.
Adding and editing optional content sections
Below the plain text area you will see a check box to "Add Content Sections." If all you need is what you've added to your Main Content section, then leave that be.
IF you want to add more content using different kinds of layout, go ahead and click that box. (For more detailed explanation, see the page on adding content sections)
From this point forward you can think of your pages as having interchangeable chunks of content!
These "content types" will allow you to add chunks of content of different kinds and then reorder them on your page. The different kinds are listed below followed by thumbnails and including links to information on what each item will require when you build them.
- Features, which are rows of items (either 3 per row or 2 per row). "Standard" features mirror what you see on our main Rowan site and include a title, an image, some teaser text and a link to another page or "Full Background" features, which will just give you columns you can fill in with anything you want.
(How to add features) - Image/text combinations, which are useful for staff or event listings.
(How to add image/text combinations) - Image Galleries, which are simliar to the "sliders" at the top of the page and give you a way of offering several images in a gallery. However these fit inside your page and include a clickable thumbnail preview of each image so your visitors can scroll quickly through the images.
(How to add image galleries) - Additional rich text areas
(How to add text areas) - Accordions, which provide an excellent way of presenting an FAQ, Vocabulary list or any kind of content that demands many headings, but only short bits of information under each. Use them to condense long pages into visually accessible information.

Accordions
Accordions offer a means of compressing the initial view of content heavy pages. They are perfect for things such as FAQ or a single topic with specific areas of interest.
