Academic Standing
What is Academic Standing?
Academic Standing refers to where students stand in terms of their academic progress and Grade Point Average (GPA).
After the fall and spring semesters, the Academic Standing Committee reviews the academic record of all undergraduate students to determine their academic standing. Academic standing is based on an individual student’s cumulative and semester Grade Point Average (GPA). All matriculated undergraduate Rowan University students must adhere to the Academic Standing Policy.
*Academic Standing Policy is different than Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) which is related to Financial Aid eligibility. Students may contact the Financial Aid Office for information about SAP.
Good Academic Standing
Academic Probation
Students who have attempted 12 or more credits who have a cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of the fall and spring term will be placed on Academic Probation for the subsequent spring or fall semester.
Students on Academic Probation will need to meet with an Academic Support Coordinator and complete the Academic Improvement Program (AIP).
Students who do not complete the requirements of the Academic Improvement Program (AIP) will have a hold on their account which will prevent them from registering for future terms.
Students who achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher after the subsequent fall or spring semester will return to Good Academic Standing. Students who earn a semester GPA of at least 2.0 but whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 will be placed on Continued Probation.
Academic probation status will be noted on the student's academic record by the Registrar's Office.
Continued Probation
Students who were previously on Academic Probation and earned a term GPA of 2.0 or higher but whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 will be placed on Continued Probation.
Students on Continued Probation must meet with an Academic Support Coordinator and complete the Academic Improvement Program (AIP).
Students who do not complete the requirements of the Academic Improvement Program (AIP) will have a hold on their account which will prevent them from registering for future terms.
Academic Probation status will be noted on the student's academic record by the Registrar's Office.
Academic Suspension
Undergraduate students who have attempted at least 12 credits, have been on Academic Probation or Continued Probation for one or more semesters, and who earn a GPA of below 2.0 in term(s) since their most recent prior academic standing update will be Suspended from the University for a period of at least one calendar year.
Suspension will be noted on the student's academic record by the Registrar’s Office. If a student has already registered for the next fall or spring semester, their registration will be canceled. Students enrolled in the immediate winter or summer session will not have their enrollment canceled.
Suspended students may not register in either academic year or summer terms, as full- or part- time students, nor as non-matriculated students.
Students who receive financial aid should contact the Financial Aid Office regarding their Academic Suspension.
Students who have been academically suspended from the University may apply for Re-enrollment through the University Advising Center after one calendar year following suspension.
Academic Suspension Appeal
Students who have been academically suspended may have the option to submit an Appeal.
The student will be notified of the appeal process. If the student chooses to appeal, they must complete and return the appeal form with supporting documentation.
If a student chooses not to appeal and/ or if an appeal is denied, the student will then be suspended from the University and any registration in future fall and spring terms will be dropped.
*Note: Decisions concerning Academic Suspension are separate from the financial aid process. Appeals related to financial aid must be made to the Financial Aid Office.
The Office of the Provost serves as the focal point for academic probation and suspension. The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is responsible for the implementation of this process.

Academic Improvement Program
The Academic Improvement Program is focused on helping students get back on track to maintain Good Academic Standing.
