Since 2018, the university has funded 33 projects with a total estimated savings of $1.7 million annually and a projected savings of over $6 million by the end of 2023.

Dr. Joel Capellan
Dr. Joel Capellan is an Assistant Professor of Law and Justice Studies. Dr. Capellan plans to develop course materials for Criminal Justice Research classes and will replace the book that is currently being used. By working with the Law and Justice Studies Librarian he plans to create a catalogue of resources at no cost to students. Student savings for Criminal Justice Research is projected to be $47,564 annually.
Dr. Adam J. Kolek:
Dr. Adam J. Kolek is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music. Dr. Kolek expanded and completed The Dictation Resource, a website for use in music theory classes. One of the goals of the music theory program is to train students to understand the music that they hear, and dictation exercises, where students notate music by ear, are part of music theory pedagogy. The website contains exercises to support the entire four-semester music theory sequence (over 500 examples in 56 chapters), and replaces an expensive required textbook and accompanying online resource.
The project is estimated to save $33,736.50 annually.
Sky Waterpeace:
Sky Waterpeace is an instructor in the Department of Mathematics. Waterpeace developed a "Calculus I Kit," which is a collection including a full professional textbook, notes, worksheets, online homework problem sets, and links to a selection of videos (full lectures and topic tutorials) for one semester of Calculus I. Waterpeace reflects, "TAP provided the resources to allow me to work full-time during non-semester time to collect, curate, and edit high-quality freely available materials."
The project is estimated to save $49,504 annually.
Dr. JoAnn Manning:
Dr. JoAnn Manning is an Instructor in the Educational Services and Leadership Department. Manning developed an electronic course package for the new foundation/initial course in the Leadership for Educational Doctorate program entitled “Leadership for Social Justice”. The electronic course package was designed to replace the traditional textbooks with free textbooks and to be available to students in one location on the first day of class. The electronic package provided assess to all of the resources necessary for the course including text books, articles and videos. The electronic course package is stored at Campbell Library and in the course syllabus.
The project is estimated to save $28,000 annually.
Dr. Qazi Kabir:
Dr. Qazi Kabir is an Assistant Professor in the Marketing & Business Information Systems Department. Dr. Kabir created a course packet for Business Logistics using two OER texts available through the Library as well as a course packet of excel problems to support the readings. Kabir reflects, "Since these resources are freely (or almost freely) available to the students, the students can immediately start studying for an exam or assignment. That is, these resources get circulated quickly to all the students. That way, the learning process gets more effective for the students."
The project is estimated to save $39,900 annually.
Yvonne Hammond:
Yvonne Hammond is an instructor in the English Department. Hammond developed a hybrid syllabus for US Literature 1 that provided students readings from both the traditionally used anthology as well as hyperlinks to digitized versions of the readings provided in the anthology (and additional readings not anthologized). The syllabus is currently saved in Google Drive, but students had access to a live syllabus all semester via Canvas. Additionally, funds were used to develop assignments and supporting activities to help encourage reading retention.
The project is estimated to save $15,000 annually.
Ganesh Chandrasekara
Ganesh Chandrasekaran is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Professor Chandrasekaran plans to redevelop all necessary course materials for the Applied Database Technology courses by creating materials which can be used across the different types of databases taught at Rowan. Annual student savings for Applied Database Technology for 2019 is projected to be $1,458.
Dr. James Grinias
Dr. James Grinias is an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. Dr. Grinias plans to redevelop the Analytical Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis course materials using an open-source textbook that would provide the necessary class materials to students at no cost. Student savings for Analytical Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis is projected to be $47,656 annually.
Dr. Bruce Plourde
Dr. Bruce Plourde is a Professor in the English Department. Dr. Plourde plans to redevelop the US Literature II course and will rely on free online resources such as Project Gutenberg and Pearson’s digital Revel archive. Student savings for US Literature II are projected to be $13,728 annually.
Dr. Olga Vilceanu
Dr. Olga Vilceanu is an Associate Professor in the Public Relations and Advertising Department. Dr. Vilceanu plans to redevelop the course materials for Media Planning as a dynamic electronic package. The redesigned package will develop around one case study 'starter' including real-world, recent information about a brand; and one media planning 'handbook' including concepts, formulas, and context that are essential for starting out in any media planning position or internship. Student savings for Media Planning are projected to be $5,775 annually.
Dr. Lisa Abrams
Dr. Lisa Abrams is an Instructor in the Psychology Department. Dr. Abrams plans to utilize free open education resources to redesign the current syllabus for the Statistics in Psychology course eliminating the cost of resources for students. Student savings for Statistics in Psychology are projected to be $55,672.50 annually.
Seth Bergmann
Seth Bergmann is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department. Professor Bergmann plans to further develop a free textbook he has written for the Computer Organization course. Student savings for Computer Organization are projected to be $25,288.80 annually.
Dr. Gregory Biren
Dr. Gregory Biren is an Associate Professor in the Health and Exercise Science Department. Dr. Biren plans to craft a new laboratory manual for the Exercise Physiology course eliminating the cost of resources for students. Student savings for Exercise Physiology are projected to be $31,535 annually.
Dr. Dustin Fife
Dr. Dustin Fife is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department. Dr. Fife plans to utilize video-based resources for the Research Methods courses. Dr. Fife will redesign the syllabus for this course to support the utilization of the video resources he has created. Student savings for Research Methods are projected to be $86,413.50 annually.
Dr. Valarie Lee
Dr. Valarie Lee is an Associate Professor in the Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Education Department Dr. Lee and the Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Education Team will be utilizing free open education resources to redesign both Literacy Pedagogy I and II to eliminate the cost of resources for students. Student savings for Literacy Pedagogy I and II are projected to be $60,701.80 annually.
Dr. Misty Knight-Finley
Dr. Misty Knight-Finley is an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Along with Dr. Danielle Gougon, Dr. Kathy Javian, and Dr. Anne Pluta, Dr. Knight-Finley will redesign the American Government syllabus and course materials to focus solely on free online resources such as articles and podcasts. These resources will replace the current textbook being used in the American Government classes and will be available at no cost to students. Student savings for American Government are projected to be $140,115 annually.
Jude Miller
Jude Miller and Amanda Haruch are Professors in the Writing Arts Department, and Sam Kennedy is the Information Literacy Librarian at the Campbell Library. They will use library resources as well as online open education resources to replace the two standard textbooks that are currently being used in the College Composition II classes. Student savings for College Composition II are projected to be $251,472.25 annually.
Dr. Matthew Pilarz
Dr. Matthew Pilarz is a Lecturer in the Chemistry Department. Dr Pilarz plans on utilizing an open education resource text to redesign the current syllabus for the Essentials of General Chemistry courses. This would completely remove the cost of resources for students taking this course. Student savings for Essentials of General Chemistry are projected to be $50,400 annually.
Dr. James Roh
Dr. James Roh is an Associate Professor in the Rohrer College of Business. Dr. Roh plans to use open education resources to replace the current book that is being used in the Operations Management classes. By working with the open source materials and online articles, Dr. Roh will be able to provide resources at no cost to students. Student savings for Operations Management are projected to be $164,016 annually.
Dr. Eve Sledjeski
Dr. Eve Sledjeski is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department. Dr Sledjeski plans to examine the current textbook and materials being used for the Essentials of Psychology courses, and redesign them utilizing free open education resources. Student savings for Essentials of Psychology for 2020 are projected to be $337,237.
