Roommate Matching FAQ
What is Roommate Matching?
Roommate matching is the process that allows students to search for, request, and mutually confirm roommates before room selection. Once both students accept the match, they are officially grouped together for housing selection.
How do I find a roommate?
To find a roommate:
- Search within the housing portal. Roommate profiles can be used to learn about a student.
- Send a request to the chosen student
- Accept any requests that have been sent
IMPORTANT: A match is not official until the request is accepted. A black check mark will appear once the match is confirmed.
Who is eligible for a roommate match?
To be eligible to match with a roommate, you MUST have a Fall 2026–Spring 2027 Housing Application on file in order for the roommate match to be processed. After the deadline, we are not honoring any roommate requests.
Can I match with an incoming transfer student?
Yes, BUT with important limitations.
- Transfer students who have completed housing applications may match with returning students during the returner process
- Deadline for transfers and returners to participate:
Thursday, February 23rd at11:59PM - No extensions will be granted
How do I log in and search for a roommate?
Follow these steps to find and request a roommate through the housing portal:
- Log into www.go.rowan.edu/myhousing
- Click “Room Selection / Roommate Matching”
- Select “Select Roommate”
- Choose the correct term from the drop-down menu
- Click the “Search for Roommate” tab
- Enter the student’s first and last name
- Review the search results and select the correct student
- Results will only show students who have completed a housing application for the selected term
Can't find your roommate in the search results?
Before assuming they are ineligible, double-check the following:
- Have all parties completed their housing application?
- This must be done before they can do anything
- Has 12 PM Noon next business day already passed?
- There is a delay from when students apply to when they are coded in the backend. Students HAVE to be coded by the assignments team in order to see the roommate matching portal correctly. 12PM on the next business day is when students can expect to be coded by.
- Is the student’s profile private?
- If a profile is private, the student will not appear in search results.
- Go to Personal Information
- Select Roommate Profile
- Under Profile Privacy, confirm that “Do Not Display Me” is NOT selected
How do I contact my roommate?
- Click the roommate profile icon to view contact details
- If no contact info is listed, use the email icon to send a message to their Rowan Student Email
- You can also poke a roommate to remind them to accept a pending request (they’ll receive an email notification)
What if I no longer want to live with my matched roommate?
- Click the delete match icon
- Return to “Search for Roommate” to request a new match
Please note that assignments will not be changed after they are already selected. If you no longer wish to live with someone you selected with, you will have to wait for a room change process to open to request that switch.
Can I search for roommates using preferences?
Yes! You can search for potential roommates based on housing application criteria.
To search by preferences:
- Follow steps 1–5 from the login instructions above
- Search for students using specific application preference criteria
- Review results and select the desired student(s) to send a roommate request
Please note: too many filters will confuse the system. Recommend to students to choose a max of 2-3 to start with.
Things to consider when matching
Opting into Gender-Inclusive Housing
Interested in living with someone of another gender identity?
If you are planning on mutually matching with individuals who have a different gender than you, all group members must ensure they are opted into gender-inclusive housing.
- To opt in, select "Yes" to the application question which asks: "Would you like to live in a gender-inclusive housing space?" This confirms that you agree to live in a gender-inclusive housing option.
Please note: If a vacancy occurs, another student who has opted for gender-inclusive housing may be assigned to the space, regardless of their gender identity.
If all group members have not opted in, you will not be permitted to select together during room selection.
Credit Hours & Roommate Matching
It is CRUCIAL to know how many credits each member of your roommate group has!
When determining class standing for the Room Selection process, we take into account the credits that you have already earned as well as the credits you are currently enrolled in for the spring term. Summer and future course enrollment is not taken into consideration in this process.
Students will receive an appointment time for room selection based on the person with the lowest class standing in their group. For example, a group of 4 matched senior students will receive appointment times during the “senior” selection date, whereas a matched group of 3 seniors and 1 sophomore will receive appointment times during the “sophomore” selection dates. Please keep this in mind when determining who you will be forming a matched group with.
- Students with 0-57 credits are considered “sophomores”.
- Students with 58-89 credits are considered “juniors”.
- Students with 90+ credits are considered “seniors”.
Transfer & Returning Students
At this time, we are allowing transfer students who have completed housing applications to match with returning students. The deadline for transfers and returners to participate in the returner process is Sunday March 1 at 11:59 PM. No extension requests will be granted.
Transfers will be able to match with other transfers for the transfer selection round until June 1.
Note: The criteria for the Selection Rounds remain the same. Most transfer credits have not yet been submitted/accepted. This means that if you choose to match with an incoming transfer student, it could impact your eligibility for certain housing options on campus. We encourage you to review housing requirements and placement guidelines to ensure your selected roommate aligns with your preferred housing assignment.
Nexus Eligibility
All Nexus properties will be only eligible to juniors and seniors. To qualify for eligibility:
- You must have either earned at least 58 Banner Credits as of Spring 2026. Current spring enrollment IS considered towards the 58 credits. Summer and future course enrollment is NOT.
- OR You must be at least 21 years old on or before September 2, 2026 to live in any Nexus Property
Please note: All members of your matched group must be eligible for Nexus in order for the group to live in Nexus. Otherwise, the entire group will not be eligible to select Nexus during your selection round.
