Responsible Conduct of Research, Scholarship, & Creative Activities
Safeguarding the integrity of research, scholarship and creative activities is fundamental to the mission of Rowan University (RU). In this regard, RU is committed to promoting a culture, which values the ethical and responsible conduct of research, scholarship and creative activities.
A recent incident reported on March 25, 2019 in Duke TODAY (https://today.duke.edu/2019/03/duke-and-us-government-reach-settlement) and the action taken by the U.S. Government brings further awareness to why it is important to adhere to the highest standards of integrity in research and what happens when individuals fail to uphold those standards.
In this mission, all members of RU share equal responsibility to ensure that fabrication, falsification and plagiarism in research, scholarship and creative activity are effectively dealt with, to preserve the high standards of integrity. In order to comply with this mission, RU faculty and students are strongly encouraged to complete the “Responsible Conduct of Research” training.
Steps to take the web-based training is provided in the following link: https://research.rowan.edu/officeofresearch/compliance/rcrtraining/rcrcititrain.html.
In addition to the above web-based training, the Office of Research Compliance in the Division of Research is available to provide additional training upon request by Colleges and Schools.
At RU, allegations of research misconduct are taken very seriously as are the needs to protect the rights of those who make allegations in good faith and the rights of those who are accused of research misconduct. Rowan University has policies and procedures in place to achieve these goals. The policy and the procedures are posted on: https://confluence.rowan.edu/display/POLICY/Research+Misconduct.
In accordance with federal regulations, students, faculty and staff at RU conducting research, scholarship and creative activity must report observed, suspected or apparent research misconduct to the Research Integrity Officer (RIO). If the individual is unsure whether a suspected incident falls within the definition of research misconduct, they may meet with or contact the RIO. Please do not discuss the matter with anyone else including reporting misconduct to the Office of Research Integrity at PHS. All information provided to the RIO will be kept confidential.
