Informal Student Assessment Tools

Rowan offers two different informal student assessment tools. Use these to obtain feedback from your students. These tools are from Anthology, the same company that offers the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction, but you can use these tools whether or not you use the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction. Even those whose department is not participating in the IDEA SRI can use these tools. You will need to have a section in the active semester.

The Feedback Tool

With this informal assessment tool, instructors can receive formative feedback from their students. Students use their mobile phones to answer questions. Instructors receive a report and suggestions for improvement to gain immediate insight about the success of their teaching methods. Feedback session results allow instructors to identify trends in student perceptions of their instruction and make improvements as soon as the next class.

The Student Response System Tool

This formative assessment tool, similar to Kahoot or an exit poll, is intended for quick, on-the-spot data collection and review. It allows instructors to write their own questions to embed direct measures of learning into various learning experiences. Students can access short “quizzes” on their mobile phones (you could count them as a quiz in the gradebook, or not). Results are viewable immediately, allowing instructors to adjust lessons and improve teaching.
