2018 Lindback

2018 Lindback Winner: Gregory Biren

Dr. Biren joined the Rowan University faculty in 2000 teaching the science-oriented courses in the Department of Health & Exercise Science, including Kinesiology, Physiology, Anatomy and Nutrition. In addition, he has developed scholarly and creative activities and provided service to the professional and wider community; however, teaching is his passion. Dr. Biren’s career vision is “for education to serve as a vehicle for all people to be inspired to love their career” while his mission is “to prepare students to achieve their career goals by providing a dynamic and rigorous educational program that ensures the development of the knowledge, skills, and disposition essential for success.”

Dr. Biren’s goal for each course is to ensure students have a thorough knowledge of content material, excellent skill development and in some ways, most importantly, the disposition for success in life and their career. He consistently stresses four themes to education:

  • Knowledge without understanding is inadequate.

  • Learning comes from processing information not from just reading it or hearing it.

  • Be an active learner, not passive.

  • Never stop learning.

Dr. Biren has a long-standing, consistent history of positive student engagement, reflective practice, development of learning activities, himself as a teacher and methods of assessment, as well as advising and mentoring students.
