Eligibility Requirements for Membership in a Fraternity or Sorority

Rowan University follows a deferred recruitment model for fraternities and sororities. This means students must complete at least one academic semester before they are eligible to join a Greek-letter organization. Deferred recruitment allows students time to adjust to college life, focus on their academics, and explore campus before committing to membership.

Joining a Greek social organization without meeting all university eligibility requirements is strictly prohibited. Failure to complete our mandatory requirements may result in a new member policy violation, which could lead to disciplinary action for both the individual student and the organization.

To be eligible to receive a bid or invitation to membership, students must:

  • Be enrolled full-time as a matriculated undergraduate student at Rowan University.

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.

  • Have earned at least 12 college credits, either:

    • At Rowan University (including any basic-skill level credits), OR

    • As a transfer student from another accredited college or university.

      • If you are a first-semester transfer student, your most recent institution’s GPA will be used to determine eligibility.

Special situations:

  • Military credit: First-semester students with at least 12 credits from military service are eligible to join if they do not yet have a Rowan GPA.

  • EOF/RISE students: Must complete 24 college-level credits and get approval from their counselor before joining.

  • Rowan Choice students: Must first complete the Rowan Choice program, transfer fully to Rowan University, and meet all new membership requirements. If you are currently a Rowan Choice student, you are not eligible to join a fraternity or sorority at this time.

Recruitment Processes

Recruitment and new member processes vary across our different Greek councils. The best way to learn about how each organization recruits is by connecting directly with the chapters or their members.

Please note that during the first two weeks of the semester, no recruitment or intake events are allowed. We want students to focus on settling into their classes and campus life before exploring Greek membership.

Below, you’ll find details about each council, including which organizations belong to them and a brief overview of their recruitment styles. You'll also find links to their Instagram pages to find out more information and connect with them directly. If you’re unsure about which organization might be the best fit or want to discuss your options with a staff member, please don’t hesitate to email us at greeklife@rowan.edu!

Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) Recruitment Process:

MGC is composed of fraternities and sororities founded with cultural, multicultural, and identity-based missions. These organizations emphasize community, advocacy, cultural awareness, academic success, and brotherhood/sisterhood.

Recruitment styles vary. Interested students are encouraged to attend informational sessions hosted by each chapter. You may hear these informational sessions called names like "Vino Blanco," "eXpresso," "Rush Week", or "Ladies Night," but they all refer to a chapter’s formal interest session. These events provide an opportunity to learn about the organization’s history, purpose, and traditions. Informational sessions are typically formal in nature, and students are encouraged to wear professional attire.

Interfraternity Council (IFC) Recruitment Process:

IFC has a "Rush Week" during the first month of each semester. Each individual fraternity will host its own events where potential members can learn more about specific organizations, including their history, values, philanthropy efforts, and brotherhood. These smaller events provide a more personalized opportunity to connect with active members and ask questions. Students are free to attend any events they choose without obligation. To stay up to date on recruitment events and details, it’s best to follow each chapter on social media, where they regularly share information about their rush events, contact info for rush chairs, and more.

National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Recruitment Process:

Rowan’s NPC sororities hold two recruitment processes each year: an informal process in the fall and spring called Continuous Open Bidding (COB) and a formal process in the spring known as NPC Formal Recruitment.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB) takes place in the fall and is an informal process. Any non-affiliated female student is welcome to attend recruitment events hosted by participating sororities. First-year students may attend events but are not eligible to join during this period. The number of organizations participating in COB varies each year, depending on their membership numbers at the start of the semester. There is also a COB period in the spring after NPC Formal Recruitment has concluded.

NPC Formal Recruitment, held in the spring, is a structured and organized process requiring advance registration. This multi-day event is designed to help students meet all participating sororities through a series of planned activities and rounds. To accommodate students’ academic schedules, recruitment events are typically held in the evenings and on weekends. Formal Recruitment provides a clear timeline and process for receiving membership invitations and allows students to experience a comprehensive introduction to the NPC community at Rowan.

*Alpha Epsilon Phi is currently a recognized chapter at Rowan University but is on a Structured Accountability Plan through June 2026. They will not be taking new members through COB in the fall or NPC Formal Recruitment in the spring.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Membership Intake Process:

NPHC chapters at Rowan conduct their membership selection/membership intake processes independently and at varying times throughout the year. These processes often begin with formal interest meetings, where prospective members learn about the organization’s values, history, and expectations. Informational sessions are typically formal in nature, and students are encouraged to wear professional attire. Before membership, students are typically required to submit transcripts and letters of recommendation, and most NPHC organizations have minimum GPA requirements and additional requirements in order to join.

NPHC organizations were originally founded to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds and place strong emphasis on their rich history, culture, and traditions. These chapters prioritize community engagement and service, encouraging members to give back and uplift others. While these organizations have historic roots in the Black/African American experience, membership is open to all students who are interested in embracing their values and mission.

Rowan University proudly stands as the only school in New Jersey with active chapters representing all nine NPHC organizations!
