2024 Lindback Winner - William Carrigan

William Carrigan

In the last quarter-century, William Carrigan, professor of history in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, has inspired students to dig deep, examine new perspectives and set high standards for themselves. Even before students arrive for classes, he reaches out to them and often stays in touch with them into their careers, helping alumni maintain their connection to Rowan. Beyond sparking thought-provoking classroom discussions, Carrigan, the graduate coordinator and former department chair, engages students in his research, which has won National Science Foundation, Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and other grants. A distinguished lecturer for the Organization of American Historians, Carrigan has taken students on cross-country trips to conduct archival research and field trips to historic sites. He has created lecture series and panel discussions, helped develop the Community of Learning in Operation program, mentored students and involved them in other learning and professional development activities. Says a colleague: “His intense devotion to students, passion for teaching, boundless energy and high standards are legendary, and his teaching record demonstrates true excellence in all the criteria set for the award.”
