A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a specialized healthcare professional and member of the interprofessional healthcare team who helps to diagnose and treat patients with breathing disorders and conditions, such as asthma, emphysema, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrest, traumatic injury, sepsis and COVID-19.

Respiratory therapists can work in doctor’s offices, sleep labs, and in homecare, but most RTs work in the hospital, including emergency rooms, every intensive care area, and with all patient ages.   • The Entry into Practice Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) is for students who complete an appropriate pre-professional associate’s degree or required pre-professional courses. Accepted students complete 60 semester hours of professional advanced study and clinical coursework to earn the BSRT. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) exams.
  • The Degree Advancement Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (BSRT) is designed for individuals who have completed an associate degree in respiratory care and hold the RRT credential.  Students complete 30 semester hours of professional advanced study and additional coursework as needed to earn the BSRT.

The BS in Respiratory Therapy program Entry into Practice Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (CoARC program number 200645), and Degree Advancement Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy (CoARC program number 510025), at the Sewell campus, holds Provisional Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (coarc.com).

This status signifies that a program with an Approval of Intent has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the Standards (through submission of an acceptable Provisional Accreditation Self Study Report (PSSR) and any other documentation required by the CoARC, as well as satisfactory completion of an initial on-site visit), to be allowed to admit students. It is recognized as an accredited program by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), which provides enrolled students who complete the program with eligibility for the Respiratory Care Credentialing Examination(s). The program will remain on Provisional Accreditation until it achieves Continuing Accreditation.
