LGBTQIA+
LGBTQIA+
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and/or questioning (LGBTQ) students at Rowan encounter the same struggles as other students but also manage the stress of navigating in a world that isn't fully accepting of people who are not heterosexual and cisgender.
Given negative messages in society, you might worry about what impact your sexual orientation, gender identity, or relationship affiliation might have on your health, family relationships, friendships, religious beliefs, or legal rights. Examples of related stressors include:
- Finding or building a supportive community
- The coming out process
- Understanding your identity
- Worrying about others' reactions to coming out or changes in your relationship status
- Tension in family relationships
- Discrimination
- Loneliness or isolation
- Unhealthy coping strategies
- Managing stress
- Anxiety
- Academic concerns
- Relationship problems
Please reach out to the Wellness Center if any of these apply to you. Counseling & Psychological Services offers a wide range of services designed to support students in their personal and professional endeavors with the goal of promoting well-being in all aspects of life.

- The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) was launched in January 2019 and at that time was the first division of its kind at a higher education institution in New Jersey. The division is charged with facilitating systemic change that addresses the following strategic priorities: creating an inclusive and equitable campus, recruiting and retaining diverse students, faculty, and staff, and promoting and supporting inclusive scholarship, teaching, and professional development.
- Affirming Name at Rowan
- From the Preferred Name Policy:
- Rowan University recognizes that many individuals use and are known by a name other than their legal name due to their gender identity, cultural background, or other aspects of their social or personal identity.
- To the maximum possible extent, faculty, staff, and students of Rowan University should be allowed to use, be known by, and be called by the name that affirms that person's gender, culture, and social identity. All University offices and personnel are expected to respect a person's request to be known by their preferred name and to use that name when interacting with individuals who have followed the process outlined in this policy. This expectation covers all areas of the University including academic instruction, advising, student life, and other University business.
- Rowan University will make good faith efforts to display preferred names to the University community where feasible and appropriate, and to update the reports, documents, and systems designated to use preferred names. The University will not guarantee that the preferred name will appear in all locations or all circumstances.
- From the Preferred Name Policy:
- Office of Student Equity & Compliance (OSEC) information for reporting sexual misconduct under Title IX.
- From the website:
- All lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual students should know that they are protected by Rowan University's Title IX policies. In addition, New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination makes it unlawful to subject people to differential treatment based on their sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity. If you are a transgender student, regardless of the federal government's current position on transgender individuals, Rowan University policies and the laws of the state of New Jersey protect you.
- Reporting Sexual Misconduct: If you are an LBGTQIA+ student and you experience sexual assault, sexual violence, intimate partner violence, or harassment, please report the incident using the Student Misconduct/Title IX Reporting Form.
- Likewise, if you report a crime to Rowan Police, a public safety officer will respectfully assist you. If you would like to speak directly with the LGBTQIA+ police liaison, Sgt. Rachel Baum, they should either call 856-256-4911 and ask to speak with Sgt. Baum or email.
- LGBTQIA+ students who would like to speak with a confidential resource should know that every counselor at the Wellness Center is a confidential resource and committed to supporting students of all gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations.
