Psychiatric Services Information
General Information
Psychiatric services at Rowan are limited. If you need to have a consultation with a CPS psychiatrist, you must be a currently enrolled student at the university. All students receiving psychiatric services at CPS must be referred by their CPS counselor. It may take several weeks or months, or longer, to see the psychiatrist initially. While we try to treat all students who are in need of psychiatric services, the psychiatrists at Rowan may not be able to prescribe medications to you, even medications you have been taking prior to coming to Rowan. Students who already have their own psychiatrist at home will be encouraged to maintain a relationship with their current psychiatrist. CPS counselors will make psychotherapy treatment recommendations, including referrals to see the psychiatrist for evaluation and medication management as appropriate. We can also recommend psychiatrists in the local area who treat students, or can work with you to find a psychiatrist in the local area who is in your insurance network. Contact Counseling & Psychological Services if these options would be helpful to you.
First Session
Your first appointment with our licensed psychiatrist lasts about one hour. At this initial session you will be asked questions about your symptoms, concerns and current medications. There is no fee for psychiatric services; however, you will be responsible for obtaining any prescribed medications.
Subsequent Sessions
Follow-up sessions generally last anywhere between 15-30 minutes, allowing the psychiatrist to monitor your response to any medications as well as recommend any changes in dosage in order to best help you.
Counseling & Medications
Clinical research indicates that most people who are prescribed psychiatric medications have better clinical outcomes with longer lasting positive effects if they simultaneously participate in counseling or psychotherapy.
It is our usual practice that consultation with our psychiatrist is available only for students concurrently participating in counseling.
Canceling Appointments
It is very important to attend any and all meetings you have scheduled with the psychiatrist. The psychiatrist has a limited schedule and is only available select days per week, making any missed appointments a missed opportunity for another patient and making it more difficult for you to reschedule. Please cancel any appointments in a timely manner by calling Counseling & Psychological Services. If a student does not show for a follow-up appointment with the psychiatrist, they will be charged a $10.00 fee.
