Award Nominations

Joseph Barnes served the University for 23 years as a professional staff member and a tenured librarian, and he regularly taught courses in the College of Communication as well. At the time of his death in 2001, Joe was Secretary of the Senate, the newly elected Vice President of F.O.R.C.E., Rowan's Local 2373, and Chair of the Campus Hearing Board. The University Senate, AFT, and Campbell Library have established and funded this annual award. The recipient will be recognized at Convocation, will have his or her name inscribed on a plaque displayed in the Campbell Library, and will receive a $3,000 honorarium.

The Joseph Barnes Award is intended to recognize the outstanding contributions of a current member of the faculty or professional staff. The recipient should be an individual who has provided consistent, extraordinary, and longstanding contributions to Rowan University. Such contributions shall include, but are not limited to, campus leadership, service on Senate and union committees, service on departmental and college committees, service to student organizations and activities, and service to the University as a whole.

Nominations

Nominations must include a "service resume" and a letter or statement describing the significance of the individual's service contributions. Very specific details of the candidate's service and the significance of that service will allow the selection committee to make an informed choice.

Any member of the faculty and professional staff may nominate a candidate. Self-nominations are also encouraged. Please submit nominations to the Senate office on or before noon Friday, February 10th.

Background

During his 23 years at Rowan University, Joseph Barnes served as a professional staff member and a tenured librarian, and regularly taught courses in the College of Communication. Throughout his career, Joe Barnes set a standard for dedication and service to the university that has seldom been matched. At the time of his unexpected death during the summer of 2001, Joe was the Secretary of the Senate, the newly-elected Vice President of F.O.R.C.E., Rowan's Local 2373, and the Chair of the Campus Hearing Board. To commemorate his dedication to the university, the University Senate, AFT, and Campbell Library have established and funded the annual Joseph Barnes Award for Outstanding Service to Rowan University.

Selection Committee

The selection committee will consist of the following:

• President of the University Senate
• Vice President of the University Senate
• President of the AFT
• Vice President I of the AFT
• Librarian (to be chosen in an election held by the Library Staff)

The Senate President will serve as the chair of this committee and will convene all meetings. Committee members may nominate candidates, but are not eligible to receive the award.

Nominations

A call for nominations will be sent out in January of each year. Nominations will be sent to the Senate Office. Any member of the faculty and professional staff may nominate a candidate. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nominations must include a description of the accomplishments of the candidate.

Criteria for Selection

This award is intended to recognize the outstanding contributions of a current member of the faculty or professional staff. In any year in which the committee deems that there are no acceptable nominees from this group, no award may be given or the award may be given to an individual who previously served on the faculty and staff.

The recipient should be an individual who has provided consistent, extraordinary, and longstanding contributions to Rowan University. Such contributions shall include, but not be limited to, campus leadership, service on senate and union committees, service on departmental and college committees, service to student organizations and activities, and service to the university as a whole.

Funding

The Award will consist of a plaque and a stipend of three thousand dollars ($3,000). Additionally, the recipient's name will be inscribed on a permanent plaque, which will be prominently displayed in the Campbell Library. The cost of the plaques shall be borne by the Library. The cost of the stipend will be divided equally between the University Senate and the local chapter of AFT.

Selection and Presentation of the Award

The committee will choose the recipient, and the award will be presented at the Celebrating Excellence Awards Ceremony each Spring.

Changes to the Process

Changes to this process can only be made with the consent of both the Senate Executive Committee and the Union Executive Committee.
