Requesting Laboratory Waste Disposal
All waste pick up requests must be completed using the Hazardous Waste Determination & Pickup Request Google Form (link provided below). Before submitting a Hazardous Waste Determination & Pickup Request Google Form, please read the following information carefully. The information collected through this form fulfills an EPA regulatory requirement ensuring that waste is properly classified. It also ensures that Laboratory Safety has the information necessary to safely handle and store the waste. All waste must be labeled with the appropriate Rowan University waste label during accumulation in the laboratory and when offered for disposal. Alternative waste labeling methods are prohibited.
The information submitted on the Hazardous Waste Determination & Pickup Request Form must match the information listed on the waste container label. Errors or missing information may result in delays with waste pickups from your laboratory.
Rowan University Hazardous Waste Determination & Pickup Request Google Form
Once you have submitted a Pickup Request Google Form, the Laboratory Safety Department will review the information provided. You will receive an email from Laboratory Safety with an estimated time that your waste will be removed.
If you have any questions regarding classifying a waste, labeling, or filling out the Google Form, please contact Laboratory Safety at LabSafety@Rowan.edu or 856-256-5105.
Rowan University Waste Minimization Program
The following program provides information and strategies that must be utilized by all users of chemicals on Rowan University Campuses to help minimize the quantity of hazardous waste we generate. Minimizing waste reduces our burden on the environment and reduces operating costs for both individual laboratories and the University as a whole.
Rowan Waste Labels
Rowan University waste labels must be utilized for all chemical waste on campus. They are designed to help ensure that all waste containers are in compliance with Federal and State regulations. Pre-printed waste labels are available in bins outside our waste rooms located on the loading dock of the following buildings:
- Discovery Hall
- Engineering Hall
- Rowan Hall
- Science Hall
- SJTP
Waste labels at the JHSC are located in Room 337.
Waste labels may also be downloaded as fillable PDF files. These labels can be printed on either the indicated label paper or on plain paper and taped to a container. Regardless of method, labels must be printed in color and should be printed on a laser printer to ensure durability.
Satellite Accumulation Areas, Requirements, & Postings
All laboratory chemical waste is collected in what are known as Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs). SAAs are designated locations that are within control of the laboratory operators where waste can be accumulated without time constraints until the container is either full or the waste is no longer being generated by the laboratory. Once a container is full, it must be transferred to a Central Accumulation Area within 3 calendar days by law. Laboratory Safety manages the transfer of waste from laboratory SAAs to the Central Accumulation Area using a pickup request system. There are several key regulatory requirements for the operation of SAAs. Please read the following guide for more information on SAAs:
Satellite Accumulation Area Requirements & Postings
Important:
- All waste containers must remain sealed at all times unless you are actively adding waste to a container.
- Do not exceed 55-Gallons of Hazardous Waste or 1-Quart/2.2-Pounds of Acutely Hazardous (P-Listed) Waste in a SAA at any given time.
- Each laboratory must have a designated Laboratory Waste Manager who is responsible for managing the waste stored in SAAs. Laboratories must perform monthly SAA Self-Inspections in BioRAFT.
- All SAAs MUST be in the same room where the waste is being generated. Waste cannot be transported to a different room for storage without violating the Federal SAA provisions.
- If hazardous waste is to be generated in a room or laboratory where an SAA cannot be established, the SAA waste accumulation provisions cannot be used.
- Laboratory Safety must be notified of any waste generated that does not comply with SAA regulations to ensure that lab waste operations remain in compliance.
SAAs must be identified in laboratories with signage provided by Laboratory Safety. To obtain SAA signs, please contact Laboratory Safety at LabSafety@Rowan.edu or 856-256-5105.
