Please read the Rowan University Regulated Medical Waste Disposal Guide for Laboratories for important information on the management of this class of waste. When completing a Hazardous Waste Determination & Pickup Request Google Form, list all waste items in the waste container including what biological/infectious material(s) the waste is contaminated with.
Regulated Medical Waste Disposal Guide for Laboratories
Important RMW Notes:
- Rowan University Regulated Medical Waste labels must be on each individual bag or container of waste in order to meet NJDEP regulations for disposal. Labels must be printed and completed using a water-resistant ink.
- All cardboard RMW boxes and plastic bins must first be lined with a red bag before any waste is added.
- ALL pointed or sharp objects that could puncture a waste bag must be disposed of in a rigid container.
- All syringes (even those without needles) contaminated with biological/infectious materials are considered medical waste by the NJDEP and must be disposed of in a sharps container.

Reusable Plastic RMW Bin Information
Laboratories interested in using reusable plastic RMW bins should contact Laboratory Safety. In general, bins must be ordered in advance so that enough can be delivered by the company that manages our medical waste. RMW bins are delivered to campus the same date as our pre-scheduled RMW shipments.

Waste labels are available in bins outside our waste rooms located on the loading dock of the following buildings:
- Discovery Hall
- Engineering Hall
- Rowan Hall
- Science Hall
- SJTP
Waste labels at the Joint Health Sciences Center are located in Room 337.
Regulated Medical Waste Shipment Schedule
On the Glassboro Campus, Regulated Medical Waste is shipped for disposal once per month. The following document contains the pre-scheduled shipping dates for the current year:
NOTICE: Rowan is in the process of obtaining a new contractor to manage RMW at the Glassboro and Joint Health Sciences Center Campuses. We anticipate having a shipment with our new contractor in July 2023. Once an updated shipment schedule is established, we will provide a link below.
