Health Essentials to Pack for College
Before arriving on campus, students should pack a few basic health and wellness items to stay prepared throughout the semester:
- Copies of health insurance and prescription cards
- Thermometer
- Prescribed medications
- Nasal Decongestant
- First aid kit (bandages, antiseptic ointment/gel)
- Cold and flu medicine (Tylenol, Motrin, Robitussin)
- Antacids (Tums, Mylanta)
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Disinfecting wipes or spray for shared spaces
- Flashlight
Protecting Your Student from the Flu
Healthy adults can spread the flu up to one day before symptoms appear, making college campuses especially vulnerable due to close living and learning environments. A yearly flu shot is one of the best ways to help protect your student and keep them healthy and in class.
Encourage your student to get vaccinated and practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing and staying home when sick.
Flu shots are available:
- At Student Health Services by appointment and during select walk-in times throughout the semester
- At local pharmacies such as CVS or Walgreens, often free with qualifying health insurance
