As part of the Rowan community we would like to remind you of the following safety and security tips:

General

Keep your doors and windows locked in your residence hall, apartment or house

Don’t let unknown or uninvited persons into your building.

Don’t prop open doors.

Before opening your door, use your peephole to identify who is at the door, if applicable.

Utilize the resources offered by Rowan to protect you (Shuttle Service or Walking Escort Service) and to learn about personal safety training register for our RAD program (RAD Rape Aggression Defense).

Be aware of Apple AirTags and report any incidents immediately to Department of Public Safety, 856-256-4922.

To avoid opportunistic theft, do not leave your property unattended.

Online

Never give out personal information to a stranger.

Never post your personal information on social networking sites where it can be viewed by anyone who has access to the network or your page.

Never send compromising or explicit photos of yourself to a stranger online.  College students who are convinced to send such photos are often targeted for blackmail or extortion schemes.

Beware of any online job offer that requires you to deposit large checks into your personal bank account and then immediately use those funds for wire transfers or gift card purchases.

When Walking

Use crosswalks to avoid Rt. 322 construction between Savitz Hall and Chamberlain Student Center. DO NOT WALK IN THE ROADWAY

Stay alert. Keep your surroundings in mind.

Use your body language to communicate that you are calm, confident, and you know where you are going.

Plan your route, and choose well-lit busy streets. Avoid vacant lots, alleys and construction sites.

Walk facing traffic, so you can see approaching vehicles. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car or home.

Know your neighborhood. Find out what places stay open late, and where your local police and fire stations are located.

If you suspect someone is following you or waiting for you, cross the street and head for the nearest well-lit populated place. Call 911.

Never walk alone late at night.

Walking Escort Service

The Department of Public Safety offers a walking escort service for any student, employee or visitor who may feel unsafe walking from one location to another on campus.

Call Public Safety for a Walking Escort if needed, 856-256-4922

When Driving

Do not drink and drive.

Lock your doors while driving.

Park in well-lit areas.

Keep at least ¼ tank of gas in your car at all times.

Keep your vehicle in good repair.

If you are being followed, drive to the nearest police or fire station, open gas station, or other well-lit areas. Get the vehicle license plate number, if possible, and call police.

If approached by someone in a threatening manner, honk the horn repeatedly and put your emergency flashers on.

Always lock your vehicle when it is parked, and keep valuables out of view.

At a Party

Go with a group of friends, and leave with the same group.

Never leave a friend alone or behind who is drinking.

Limit the amount of alcohol you consume, and don’t accept drinks unless you saw the drink poured from the original container.

Be cautious of new people who offer to go to your residence or invite you to theirs.

Never leave anyone in a vulnerable position even if you do not know him/her personally. Call 911 to get help.

Avoid secluded rooms or other places where you can be isolated and vulnerable.

Never take a drink offered by a stranger.

Never leave your drink unattended; someone could tamper with it.

Trust your instincts, if you feel uncomfortable, leave.
