Description of Test
- This is a test that was developed by the Chemistry Department at Rowan University to determine your level of preparedness for Chemistry. The test is administered without any fee through our online learning system, Canvas. There are 25 multiple choice questions on a variety of subjects and the score determines placement into Essentials of Chemistry (CHEM 05100) or Chemistry I (CHEM 6100). *Note: If you are in the Cooperative BSN program you will take either Essentials of General Chemistry (CHEM 05100) or General Organic and Biological Chemistry (CHEM 05105). Any incoming student in one of the majors that requires Chemistry must take this placement test, unless you meet one of the exemptions listed in the Frequently Asked Questions.

Chemistry Test Exemptions

*You are exempt from the Chemistry placement testing if you scored a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry Test or successfully transfer college level Essentials or Chemistry I. Courses that are currently in progress cannot be considered for exemption. AP exam results must be submitted to the Registrar's Office.

Chemistry Placement Test FAQs
When and where do I take the Chemistry placement test?
Your Chemistry placement test must be completed before you can register for a Chemistry course. Incoming first-year students starting in the fall must complete the test by June 1 to register for fall semester courses.
For incoming first-year students starting in the spring, the test must be completed by December 12 to register for spring semester courses.
The Chemistry placement test is taken online through Rowan University's Online Learning System (Canvas), and can be taken at home or anywhere with a reliable internet connection.

How long is the Chemistry placement test?
You will be given 60 minutes to complete your Chemistry placement test. If you are approved for extended testing time, you can request extended time for your test by emailing us at genchem@rowan.edu.
Once you begin your Chemistry placement test, you cannot pause, exit, or restart it. Please ensure you set aside enough time to complete the test in one sitting.
Should I prepare for the Chemistry placement test?
You can prepare for the Chemistry placement test by reviewing basic Chemistry principles covered in any high school Chemistry book.
What is covered on the Chemistry placement test?
There are 25 questions, each worth 4 points. Topics include: measurements, atoms, elements, ions, isotopes, compounds, the periodic table, naming and formula for simple compounds, balancing chemical equations, simple reaction stoichiometry, chemical reactions, mass percent, density and states of matter.
Can I use a periodic table and calculator for the Chemistry placement test?
Yes! You are permitted to use a calculator, periodic table, scratch paper and a pencil.
What do my Chemistry placement test scores mean?
0%-50%: You will be required to complete a prerequisite course Essentials of General Chemistry (CHEM 05100). Essentials of General Chemistry is specifically designed to help prepare you to take Chemistry I. Essentials of General Chemistry does not meet any General Education requirements and may not meet the requirements for some majors. *Note: If you are in the Cooperative BSN program, Essentials of General Chemistry (CHEM 05100) will prepare you to take General Organic and Biological Chemistry (CHEM 05105).
51% or greater: You may register for Chemistry I (CHEM 6100). *Note: If you are in the Cooperative BSN program and received a Chemistry Placement score of 51% or greater, you will take General Organic and Biological Chemistry (CHEM 05105).
The Chemistry I course may vary by major and you are encouraged to contact your academic advisor for assistance in selecting the appropriate course. While a score greater than 51% indicates that you are likely capable of successfully completing CHEM 6100, it does not predict your grade in CHEM 6100. You are only permitted to take CHEM 6100 if you earn a passing score on the Chemistry placement test or meet one of the requirements.
Can I re-take my Chemistry placement test?
No, you cannot not retake your Chemistry placement test.
We understand that extenuating circumstances, such as a power outage, may occasionally affect your ability to complete the test. If you believe you qualify for a challenge test to re-take the Chemistry placement test, please email genchem@rowan.edu.
