Search tips
1. Basic search
When you enter a search term—let's say Bunce—MediaCloud will look at every asset in the library for an
occurrence of the word Bunce. This includes:
- Keywords
- File names
- File Titles
- Comments
- Categories
- Certain MetaData Fields (additional information that gets imported with the file)
2. Combined (Boolean) searches
If you search for Bunce Hall—MediaCloud will return any assets that contain all of these words because MediaCloud sees this as Bunce AND Hall (the "and" is implicit).
If you don’t want this you could use: Bunce OR Hall—MediaCloud will then give you assets with either Bunce or Hall.
Finally, let's say you want to search for assets that contain Bunce but do not have Hall—then just type Bunce NOT Hall.
If you're feeling extra adventurous you can combine boolean operators into super long searches, for example, Bunce AND Hall NOT building OR president.
3. Exact phrase search
If you are looking for a specific phrase you could search using quotes around your terms. For example, "Bunce Hall" will return assets with this exact phrase.
4. Searching in specific fields or attributes
If you get a lot of search results, you can narrow your results by telling MediaCloud exactly where you want it to look, for example:
- Title: Bunce will return all assets with the word “Bunce” in the title but it won’t bring back assets that have Bunce as a keyword
- Filename: Bunce will return all assets with the word “Bunce” in the filename
- Keyword: Bunce will return all assets with the word “Bunce” as a keyword
- Category: Bunce will return all assets in the category "Bunce"
5. Using filters
Still seeing too many assets? You can always apply filters to further reduce the number of results returned. You can filter by type—so if you’re only looking for videos, simply select the video filter to hide all the image files. You can filter by colors or text in imagery. You can also filter by star rating, so if you wish you can only see five-star assets (please note, Publications discourages the use of star ratings for photographs for numerous reasons).
