Campus Sustainability

Rowan University is working towards reducing our environmental impacts in our buildings and operations. We consider our "campus" to include not only our main campus in Glassboro, but also our campuses in Camden and Stratford, which have their own personalities and sustainability obstacles to overcome. We also consider the communities in which we operate part of our campus, and are always looking to contribute positively to the ecology, economy, and societal health in those places.

In particular, the University is at the early stages of developing a comprehensive campus Sustainability Master Plan. This plan will document and detail our environmental impacts and provide a roadmap for improving our environmental performance, including aspects like air and water quality that can play a role in human health outcomes.

We are also at the initial stages of gathering data and completing our first Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System ("STARS") report, which we will make available on our website once it is complete.

Sustainability Updates from Around Campus

June 6, 2020 - Release of Campus Sustainability "Wishlist"

June 1, 2020 - What the Chamberlain Student Center is doing in regards to Sustainability:

  • This past May we installed all new energy efficient LED lighting in the ballroom
  • We upgraded all of our audio/visual equipment to be more energy efficient, this includes all meeting spaces and the ballroom
  • We converted all water fountains to filtered bottle filling stations
  • This past fall we handed out free collapsible water bottles courtesy of the Student Center to incoming students during orientation
  • All of our areas Information Desk, Game Room, SUP, and RAH have purchased aluminum reusable straws as promotions give-a-ways at various events including orientation last year
  • Two of the three air handling units which heat and cool the building have been replaced recently and are significantly more efficient than the older units
  • We have replaced a majority of exterior lighting to LED, and we are replacing lights throughout the building to LED with the lights outside of our restrooms being converted to LED
  • We are currently investigating low-flow and motion activated faucets for our restroom facilities
  • We currently have two trash compactors for the facility, one new as of May 2019. These compactors cause the waste to take up less space and require fewer collections by our trash collection contractor
  • We installed energy efficient solar shades in our game room in early last June and the lower level offices this May, this keeps the temperature down and requires less power to be used on air-conditioning
