Accessing a SART Nurse After Sexual Assault

If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, it's important to know that help is available. A SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) nurse, also known as a Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) or SANE, is a specially trained medical professional who provides confidential, trauma-informed care and optional evidence collection following a sexual assault.

Where to Go

  • In Camden County: SART nurses are available 24/7 at designated hospitals such as Jefferson Health – Stratford Campus and Cooper University Hospital. You do not need to go to the emergency room first—ask directly for the SART nurse.

  • In Gloucester County:

    • Call the Gloucester County SANE/SART Office at 856‑384‑5555 to be connected to the on‑call coordinator or forensic nurse
    • The Child Advocacy Center of Gloucester County (432 Glover Street, Woodbury) hosts the SART/FNE Coordinator and is available to facilitate 24/7 hospital activations
    • Gloucester County Sexual Violence Hotline: SERV of Gloucester County at 866‑295‑7378, available for guidance, advocacy, and accompaniment

What to Expect

  • A SART nurse provides medical treatment, STI and pregnancy prevention, and forensic evidence collection (if desired) in a safe, private setting.
  • A Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate (CSVA) is available to support you 24/7—offering emotional care, information, and accompaniment during exams or interview.
  • You can opt in or out of any part of the exam; reporting to law enforcement is not required to receive care.

Rowan Sexual Violence Prevention Program has created a guide for what to do if you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted.
