Bantivoglio Honors Concentration with Distinction
The Bantivoglio Honors Concentration with Distinction (HWD) differentiates Honors students within the Honors College. The program provides students with the opportunity for academic depth in their chosen area of study and more breadth across disciplines. Students work closely with faculty mentors to complete a capstone project that enriches their experience in their fields of study. Students complete a total of twelve (12) Honors designated courses, an honors capstone project, and a portfolio reflection on their Honors coursework and their capstone experience.
What is the HwD Capstone project?
The HwD Capstone project is an independent project that demonstrates the depth of your learning in your field of study. You will work closely with a faculty mentor to propose, design, and complete your project.
How Does HwD Work?
HwD students take a total of 12 Honors courses.* In addition to the regular load of 8 Honors courses, HwD requirements include:
1 additional Honors course or Alternative Course Experience (ACE)
3 HwD courses that support every stage of your process:
- 1 HwD proposal course (0 credit)
- 1 HwD capstone course (1 credit, though the course is taken over 2 semesters)
- 1 HwD portfolio course (1 credit)
* Transfer students’ requirements are adjusted based on the number of semesters they are on campus

What does the HwD timeline look like?
Sophomore Year: Consult with HwD Coordinator to discuss interests and possible mentors.
Junior Year: Work with HwD Coordinator to identify a faculty mentor during the fall, complete Proposal Course during the spring semester.
Senior Year, Fall: Enroll in Capstone Course, conduct research, draft your written/creative work.
Senior Year, Spring: Enroll in Capstone Course, complete your written/creative work, give a public presentation or performance. And: enroll in Portfolio Course, complete your portfolio reflection on all your Honors work and experience.
Please note: Because of student teaching requirements, Education majors will be accelerated by one year at each stage, completing HWD by the end of junior year.

How is HwD assessed?
HwD requires your commitment to regular meetings with your faculty mentor and with the HwD coordinator.
HwD is graded Pass (P) / No Credit (NC) and requires that students earn a Satisfactory (S) grade in the Honors Capstone Proposal Course and a Pass (P) in the Honors Capstone Experience and Portfolio courses.
Requirements for (P) or (S) grades will be negotiated at the start of each course between the student, the HwD coordinator, and the Faculty Mentor. Rubrics and suggested objectives for each semester are outlined in the syllabi associated with each course.
Students who do not receive a passing or satisfactory grade in an HWD course (Honors Proposal, Honors Capstone Experience (both fall and spring semesters), and/or Honors Portfolio) will be removed from Honors with Distinction and returned to the Honors Concentration.
Students must have earned and continue to maintain a 3.5 GPA to be eligible for, remain in, and graduate with Honors with Distinction. How do I apply?
After you have met with your advisor, the Honors advisor, and the HwD coordinator and have an idea for a project and a faculty mentor who has agreed to advise you, email Dr. Hyde to offically enroll.
