Visting Scholars & Interns

Academic departments can sponsor a scholar or student intern for J-1 status at no cost to the department. Scholars and interns can be fully self-funded, funded by their home country institution, or receive a stipend from Rowan University directly.

Please review the information on this page before proceeding with the Exchange Visitor Application process.

Rowan University is permitted to host the following J-1 scholar categories:

  • Professor & Research Scholar: For teaching, observing, lecturing, conducting research (including post-doctoral fellows and post-doctoral research associates), or consulting.
    • 3-week minimum, 5-year maximum, with a 24-month bar on repeat participation.
  • Short-term Scholar: Lecturing, conducting research, observing, or consulting.
    • No minimum, 6-month maximum, no extensions.
  • Specialist: Observing, consulting, or demonstrating his/her highly specialized knowledge or skills).
    • 3-week minimum, 1 year maximum but not subject to 24-month bar.
  • Student Intern: For international university students to come to the United States to gain exposure to U.S. culture and receive hands-on experience in their chosen occupational field.
    • 3-week minimum, 12-month maximum.

J-1 Eligibility Requirements

J-1 scholars cannot...

  • ..be offered a tenure track or tenured faculty appointment
  • ...enter the U.S. to participate in medical residency programs or engage in clinical activities
    • Incidental patient contact may be permitted under limited circumstances—contact the International Center for more information
  • ...cannot pass through the formal recruitment and hiring process with Human Resources, or pursue permanent U.S. residency

J-1 scholars must...

  • ...receive an offer from an interested department or faculty member at Rowan University
    • Prospective scholars cannot come to Rowan University without the endorsement of an academic department!
  • ...have, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree unless pursuing a student internship
  • ...be proficient in English with proof of proficiency on-file at the International Center
  • ...maintain health insurance from the moment of entry to the U.S., until the moment of departure
    • Health Insurance Policy for Exchange Visitors
  • ...must demonstrate adequate funds for the duration of the appointment/program at Rowan University
    • Scholars who are being paid by Rowan University can use the departmental offer letter as proof of funding
    • All other scholars must demonstrate at least $2,000 per month for the duration of the J-1 program
