J-1 Scholar Required Document List
The following documents are required to invite an international scholar to Rowan University on J-1 status. Please contact the International Center with any questions about these requirements. All documents should be sent to the International Center at rowanic@rowan.edu, or to the appropriate International Scholar Advisor.
Documents for all new J-1 scholars
- J-1 Scholar Packet (for scholars) OR J-1 Student Intern Packet (for student interns)
- Packet must be complete with all required signatures
- Copy of the scholar’s passport
- Copy of the scholar’s CV/resume
- Invitation letter from the department (template available if needed)
- Proof of English proficiency
- Acceptable types of proof:
- English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, Duolingo, etc) - click for accepted test types & minimum scores
- Letter confirming that the department evaluated English scores via an interview - click for template
- Acceptable types of proof:
- DS-7002 Training/Internship Placement Plan (for student interns only)
- Letter from current academic advisor in home country (or internship agreement, if applicable) approving the student internship/exchange
Additional document for unpaid/self-funded scholars:
- HR’s Volunteer Form (only if the scholar is not on Rowan's payroll)
- Financial support documentation
- Scholars must demonstrate, at minimum, $2,000 per month of the J-1 program if they will be self-funded
Additional documents for scholars already in the U.S. on J-1 status (transfers-in):
- Scholar’s current DS-2019
- Scholar’s current J-1 visa
- Scholar’s most recent I-94
- Contact information for the scholar’s current school’s international office
