When will Smart Plan be available to me?
Beginning in Spring 2026, Smart Plan will be rolled out to undergraduate and graduate students in fully online programs. Following this initial implementation, Smart Plan will be rolled out to on-campus students one program at a time. To find out if your program is available yet on Smart Plan, see below.
Why should I use Smart Plan?
Smart Plan will help you translate the entirety of your degree requirements (available on Degree Works) into a digestible, semester-by-semester plan so that you can estimate which courses you will take in which semesters. It will also help you choose individual course sections that will meet your degree requirements and fit into your own personalized schedule.
What is the difference between Degree Works and Smart Plan?
Degree Works is the foundation of Smart Plan, as it outlines all of the components and requirements for your degree. Degree Works monitors your overall degree progress and feeds your “still needed” courses to Smart Plan. Smart Plan then plans those courses into individual semesters so that you can meet the requirements on Degree Works.
Do I still need Degree Works?
Yes, you should still periodically monitor Degree Works to make sure you are making progress toward 100% completion of your degree program(s).
Do students still need to meet with their advisor?
Yes. It’s still important for students to meet with their advisor regularly. Smart Plan helps students map out their courses, which means advising meetings can focus less on scheduling courses and more on bigger-picture topics—like academic goals and career interests.
Can students register for courses directly from Smart Plan?
Students should continue to register for courses through Self-Service Banner.
Will Smart Plan override Banner restrictions (holds, major restrictions, prereqs/co-reqs)?
No. Smart Plan never overrides Banner. It blocks ineligible choices, enforces prereqs/co-reqs, and won't register against holds or restrictions.
Can I still use Section Tally?
You will find most of the same information about courses available in Smart Plan, so you may not need to utilize Section Tally. However, the new Section Tally is a great tool that you may still find helpful when searching for additional sections of courses.
Can a student have more than one plan?
Yes, students can have multiple plans created by either the student or advisor.
Can advisors lock a plan so students can't change it?
Yes. Advisors can save an advisor-recommended plan that the student cannot edit. Students can still create their own separate editable plans or generate a 'what-if' plan.
Does Smart Plan update automatically when students withdraw or fail courses?
Yes. Smart Plan syncs data from Banner and Degree Works. Drops and fails trigger plan adjustments, which adds time to degree, if needed.
If the schedule hasn’t been built yet, how does Smart Plan know if a student can take a planned course?
Smart Plan only suggests specific sections of courses for terms where sections are built- typically one or two semesters in advance. Smart Plan's projections for future terms rely on course history and sequencing.
Will Smart Plan account for CUGS, minors, and multiple programs?
Yes. Smart Plan can plan across all declared credentials to consider shared courses and create one cohesive plan.
How will Smart Plan adjust when a student changes majors?
It automatically rebuilds the plan using previously completed courses that apply to the new major.
Is there a 'What If' feature like DegreeWorks?
Yes. Students can explore alternate majors and concentrations, and Smart Plan will provide a 'What If' plan immediately.
