Advancing Arts in Health Research‎

Healing Arts Research Lab

We’re diving into the science behind how the arts can improve health, learning, and care. Our research team includes students, faculty, and clinical partners working together to explore how creative approaches impact physical and mental wellness, pain management, medical education, and more. From arts prescriptions to artist residencies, we’re building real data to show what makes healing through the arts effective.

Current Research Projects

  • ArtWise Rx at the Pain Management Clinic
This research explores how an arts prescription program can be a valuable resource for pain management practices. By studying how arts prescribing affects pain, mental health, and daily function, our goal is to evaluate whether referring patients to community-based arts programming can offer meaningful support for managing chronic pain as a non-pharmacological intervention.

  • Artist-in-Residence Evaluation
This research will investigate the feasibility and accessibility of an artist-in-residence program in clinical settings, exploring its potential to reduce burnout and enhance well-being among participants. Our aim is to measure how art in clinical spaces supports patient experience and staff wellness, both with hands-on sessions and using art in clinical environments themselves, such as in waiting rooms.

  • Diverse Medical Models in Education
This research explores how sculpture and visual arts help improve cultural understanding and anatomy learning for medical students. We aim to analyze the potential of using artistic materials to create accessible medical models that engage and inform medical curriculum.
