‎ Creative Expression as a Path to Wellness

Healing Through Art

Our programs use art to bring people together and support mental health in meaningful ways. Veterans can connect and unwind through glassmaking, while students and patients get access to fun, free creative experiences that boost well-being. Whether it's making art in a hospital or together in a classroom setting, these programs help build a stronger, more connected community.

Creative Connections

Creative Connections, offered in partnership with Rowan–Virtua NJISA, is a series of joyful and accessible arts workshops designed for adults 55+. Led by talented teaching artists from our community, these sessions invite you to explore papermaking, sculpture, watercolor, abstract painting, and more. Each workshop is a chance to discover new skills, connect with others, and create artwork you can be proud of.

Creative Connections is made possible by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts

Artist in Residency Program

The Artist-in-Residence programs at the George Family Center for Healing Arts integrate professional artists into clinical and care-based environments, using creative practice to support well-being, connection, and communication. The artists work alongside patients, families, and providers to facilitate meaningful artistic engagement, complement clinical care, and introduce participants to the healing powers of art.

  • CARES
Within the Child Abuse Research Education and Service Institute (CARES Institute), an embedded artist works parallel with healthcare professionals who regularly navigate the emotional weight of supporting children and families impacted by trauma. The artist’s role introduces a non-clinical point of connection within the workplace to help support the overall well-being of providers operating in a highly sensitive care context.
  • RISN
At the Rowan Integrated Special Needs Center (RISN), the residency serves individuals with complex developmental and physical disabilities. Led by Artist-in-Residence Aya Kinoshita, workshops are designed to encourage personal expression through adaptable drawing sessions and hands-on activities, which collectively inform the design of a large-scale community mosaic mural to be installed on the entrance wall of RISN.
