Will the OGC represent me if I am sued?
The OGC represents the University, and will only give legal advice if you are sued in an official capacity as a Rowan University employee. The OGC will not provide legal representation or advice to any student or employee for personal matters.
Can I retain outside counsel for a University matter?
Rowan University employees should not seek outside counsel for a university matter without contacting the OGC. If outside counsel is necessary, the OGC will work with you individually to acquire outside counsel.
Are my communications with the OGC attorneys confidential?
Communications with the OGC may be protected by the attorney-client privilege. However, not all communciations are confidential because the OGC represents the University rather than individual employees.
What type of legal services does the OGC provide?
The OGC provides representation to the University in all matters of Higher Education, ranging from contracts and transactions to litigation prevention and management.
Who does the Office of General Counsel represent?
The Office of General Counsel provides legal advice and representation to Rowan University.
Am I indemnified if I am sued in connection with University business?
New Jersey state law provides limited immunity and indemnification to state employees where the litigation arises directly in relation to the employees' duties as a state employee. Immunity and indemnification are not available in cases where employees act with intentional malfeasance or in matters involving criminal acts.
