ROWAN UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY & MUSEUM
A Museum Destination for Contemporary Art
Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum serves as a vibrant cultural destination for South Jersey, the Rowan community, and surrounding region. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive, accessible, and just environment that encourages dialogue and collaboration between exhibiting artists, students, faculty, the general public, and other cultural institutions through the presentation of interdisciplinary art exhibitions, artist talks and other public programming. We present diverse forms of contemporary art by professional artists with content that is thought provoking, relevant, and timely. Our mission is to engender curiosity and a passion for contemporary art, enrich the quality of life for area residents, create a welcoming and inclusive cultural destination at Rowan University, and function as a resource for contemporary art throughout the region.
Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum is comprised of two key locations. 301 High Street Gallery produces curated contemporary art exhibitions by professional artists with accompanying educational programming. Conveniently located at the intersection of the University campus and the heart of Glassboro, this gallery is an active arts resource for students and the public. Rowan University Art Gallery and Museum at Westby, located in Westby Hall, serves as a venue for our permanent collection. Anchored by a permanent display of The Sister Chapel, a historic collaborative feminist installation, programming encourages close viewing of selections of works by American women artists who were active in the pivotal period of the 1970s and 1980s.
Programming is developed in collaboration with other academic areas including: engineering, sociology, anthropology, history, education, environmental studies, social justice, performing arts, and gender studies programs. Programming has included many group and solo exhibitions by internationally recognized artists such as: Mel Chin, Willie Cole, Joyce Kozloff, Beverly Semmes, Dread Scott, Diane Burko, Ebony Patterson, Saya Woolfalk, Jeanne Silverthorne, Federico Solmi, Syd Carpenter, Genevieve Gaignard, Wendy Red Star, Tommy Kha and other notable artists.
Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum has been the recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence. In 2015, Rowan University Art Gallery received a National Endowment for the Arts, Artworks grant, the first ever for the university.
