Broadways & Musicals (H2)

Broadway consists of theatrical performances in the 41 professional theatres in New York City's Theater District and Lincoln Center. Broadway and London's West End represent the highest commercial level of live theater in the English-speaking world. Musical performances happen all over the world. Let's quickly review our three arrangements: Hamilton, The Greatest Showman, and Phantom of the Opera.

Hamilton (H3)

Hamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through biographical musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, the musical covers the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution and the political history of the early United States. Composed over a seven-year period from 2008 to 2015, the music draws heavily from hip-hop and R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the United States' Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as "America then, as told by America now."

The Greatest Showman (H3)

The Greatest Showman is a 2017 American biographical musical drama film directed by Michael Gracey (in his directorial debut) from a screenplay written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, and a story by Bicks. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. Featuring nine original songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a score composed by John Debney and Joseph Trapanese, the film is based on the story and life of P.T. Barnum, a famous showman, and entertainer, and his creation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives of its star attractions.

Phantom of the Opera (H3)

Based on a 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of the young soprano Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her.
