The Rowan University Maroon Book Club is a progressive book club that formed in the Fall 2015 semester in order to provide space for students, faculty, staff, and community members to read and analyze books that we select together that aim to create progressive social change.

This semester MAROON Book Club will be reading two books: Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay and Hillbilly Elegy A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance. We will be meeting in Hawthorn Room 215 every other Tuesday.

The 2019 Black History Month opening event will feature author and historian Dr. Steven Hahn. Dr. Hahn is a professor of history at New York University. His previous work, A Nation Under Our Feet, received the Pulitzer Prize in History (2004), the Bancroft Prize in History (2004), and the Merle Curti Prize in Social History (2004), and was a finalist for the Lincoln Prize and Frederick Douglass Prize.

RU NIICE?

Navigating Intergender Identities Communities and Equity

RU NIICE provides space for non-binary, inter-gender, intersex, gender-fluid, and gender non-conforming individuals to come together, share, and discuss gender identity and expression, as well as issues these communities are facing. The program aims to educate and celebrate all students in regards to gender identity and expression, to create safe space for gender non-conforming individuals, build community, and to help shape equity across campus.

Black History Month Event featuring
Mike Africa, Jr.

This BHM event will feature Mike Africa Jr., who was born behind bars in 1978 just before his parents were sentenced to 30 to 100 years. Mike is a political activist, hip-hop artist and dedicated member of the Philadelphia-based MOVE organization. He has made it his life’s work to free the MOVE 9 political prisoners, including his parents Debbie and Mike, Sr. who were paroled in 2018. He is working to build an activist hub and community museum in Philadelphia through a non-profit organization he founded in 2017 known as the Seed of Wisdom Foundation (SOWF). The SOWF encourages young people to be physically active for healthy living and socially active to expose issues of environmental, animal rights and political injustices. Mike Africa Jr.’s memoir will be published in 2019 by Common Notions Books.

They have performed in over 100 different shows over the past four years, and have traveled all over, including France to perform. Rosa Parks Luncheon

Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, has served as President of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance. He chaired the National Academies’ committee that produced the 2011 report, Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads. He was named in 2012 by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. His 2013 TED talk highlights the “Four Pillars of College Success in Science.” In 2008, he was named one of America’s Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked UMBC the nation’s #1 “Up and Coming” university for six years (2009-14).

Vagina Monologues

The Women’s Center in the office of Social Justice, Inclusion, and Conflict Resolution invites the Rowan community to a presentation of Eve Ensler’s Obie Award-winning book, “The Vagina Monologues” directed by Maddy Roberts.  The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery.  Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, The Vagina Monologues gives voice to women’s deepest fantasies and fears, and after seeing this production, no one will ever look at a woman’s body, or think of sex, in the same way again.

Feminist Activist Symposium

Book Club

The Rowan University Maroon Book Club is a progressive book club that formed in the Fall 2015 semester in order to provide space for students, faculty, staff, and community members to read and analyze books that we select together that aim to create progressive social change.

This semester MAROON Book Club will be reading two books: Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay and Hillbilly Elegy A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance. We will be meeting in Hawthorn Room 215 every other Tuesday.

Food will be provided.

Through a series of gentle stretches, mindful breathing exercises, and visualization, this class utilizes the postures of restorative yoga to create a balanced internal state of being. By interrupting patterns of stress, Relax and Align will provide ongoing practical tools that may be utilized anytime to induce internal peace and wellbeing.

True Colors Clothing Swap

The Clothing Swap is an event hosted by True Colors once a semester that provides students with an opportunity to get clothing that better fits their gender presentation.
 
Donations are being accepted until 4/5 in Hawthorn and at the Student Center Information Desk.
 
The event will take place on 4/11/19, from 7:00 PM to 1:00 AM, in Student Center room 144. We ask that from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the space is used just by transgender and gender non-conforming folks, and at 8:00 PM, it opens up to our cisgender ally friends! It will also be open for Rowan After Hours that evening, from
9:00 PM to 1:00 AM, as a part of their "Prof Transformation: Pride In Your Look" event (also for Pride Week).

RU NIICE? Navigating Intergender Identities Communities and Equity

RU NIICE provides space for non-binary, inter-gender, intersex, gender-fluid, and gender non-conforming individuals to come together, share, and discuss gender identity and expression, as well as issues these communities are facing. The program aims to educate and celebrate all students in regards to gender identity and expression, to create safe space for gender non-conforming individuals, build community, and to help shape equity across campus.

Student Dialogue

F.A.M. is a network of Rowan University faculty and staff that fosters and advances the mental health and emotional well-being among self-identified students of color of Rowan University.

Through this network, students will have the opportunity to engage in monthly U Good F.A.M. dialogues, while also having access to mental health liaisons for ongoing guidance, support and referrals to the Wellness Center if needed.

This program is organized to serve Rowan students who have been impacted by the incarceration of one or more parent/guardians at some point during their lifetime. Our group meets twice a month and offers peer support, mentoring, social and educational events, hosts guest speakers and participates in research efforts to bring attention to the issues and challenges confronting the children of incarcerated parents.
