About the School of Veterinary Medicine

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is the first veterinary school in the State of New Jersey.

The school, which will keep aspiring New Jersey veterinarians in state while also attracting out-of-state students, will address an increased national demand for veterinarians, veterinary specialists and skilled technicians.

The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges has predicted a shortage of 15,000 veterinarians in the nation within two decades.

The school is expected to welcome its first class of 60-70 students in 2025, pending approval from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.

With the addition of the veterinary school, Rowan will become only the second institution in the nation to offer D.V.M., M.D. and D.O. degrees. Currently, there are just 33 veterinary schools in the United States and only five on the east coast.

About the Shreiber gift
In April of 2023, entrepreneur and philanthropist Gerald B. Shreiber pledged $30 million in support of the veterinary school. Shreiber’s gift will be support scholarships to keep the costs of a veterinary school education affordable for students.

Location
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine will be located on Rowan’s West Campus in Harrison Township. The 108,000-square-foot building will include academic classrooms, educational and diagnostic laboratories, a teaching hospital and administrative and faculty offices.

Gov. Phil Murphy joined with Shreiber and Rowan and state officials at a groundbreaking for the building during a ceremony in April of 2023.

In 2021, the New Jersey Legislature approved $75 million in funding to help support the construction of the school’s primary academic and clinical facilities.
