DEI Champion Spotlight: Dr. Shealey and Charles A. Barnes II, JD Leading the Way with American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE)

The DEI Champion Spotlight features Rowan community members leading the way in DEI initiatives across campus. Champions featured in the spotlight serve as a great example of how DEI can be reflected throughout the campus and within our broader communities. This month, we’re excited to highlight the accomplishments of those within our Division of DEI! Join us in congratulating Charles A. Barnes II, JD, our Ph.D. graduate fellow for the Division of DEI and the newly elected President of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Holmes Scholars, and Dr. Monika Williams Shealey, Senior Vice President of the Division of DEI, and newly appointed Chair of the Board of Directors with AACTE.

The AACTE Holmes Program supports students who self-identify as racially and ethnically diverse and are pursuing graduate degrees in education at AACTE member institutions. Founded in 1991 for doctoral students, the Holmes Program now provides mentorship, peer support, and professional development for racially and ethnically minoritized masters and doctoral students.

As the 2023-2025 President of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), National Holmes Scholars Program, my role includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Collaborate with the AACTE staff in program direction and serve as a spokesperson for the AACTE Holmes Program.
  2. Represent the Holmes National Council on the AACTE Holmes Programmatic Advisory Committee.
  3. Appoint Council members to serve on designated committees
  4. Preside over meetings and provide onboarding for the newly elected officers.
  5. Serve as a conduit to AACTE for participating member Institutions.

Goals

To continue building and maintaining the relationship with the AACTE community and industry leaders to encourage financial support for Scholars of Color.

Position-Chair, Board of Directors, American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE)

Description: The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) is the leading voice on educator preparation. AACTE represents more than 800 postsecondary institutions with educator preparation programs dedicated to high-quality, evidence-based preparation that assures educators are ready to teach all learners.

AACTE is governed by a Board of Directors composed of both elected and appointed members.

The Board of Directors are selected through national elections.

The Board of Directors determines the policies that guide the program of activities of AACTE. It meets at least twice per year, as mandated in the bylaws, to carry out its many functions in connection with the operation and evaluation of the organization’s national program.
During my tenure as Chair, I plan to prioritize cultivating and nurturing the next generation of leaders in the field and the organization through mentoring, programming, and targeted outreach to our diverse members.
