Title of talk: "Beyond Resilience: Feminism, Crossroads, and 'Crises' in Haiti"

In 2021, the country of Haiti and its people both in Haiti and its diaspora experienced a series of shocking events from assassination to migrants being racially assaulted on the US-Mexico border. This has led many international observers to the conclusion that the country and its people are in a 'crisis'. In this thought-provoking talk, Dr. Jean-Charles will invite the audience to question how the terms "resilience" and "crisis" have been used in the context of Haiti over several decades by looking at the work of Haitian feminists from the 20th and 21st centuries. Using her latest book - Looking for Other Worlds - as a guide, Jean-Charles will pose ethical questions about how the lived experience of ordinary Haitian people is shaped by race, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and more. Rooted in a Black feminist ethic, Dr. Jean-Charles will attest to multiple narratives being imagined and created whereby "ways of looking" lay the foundation for shifting paradigms and changing perspectives. And, harnessing the interdisciplinarity of Feminist Studies, Haitian Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Africana Studies, this lecture will challenge the use of terms like resilient and crisis in favor of more nuanced approaches to understanding Haitian history, culture, and current events.
