DEI encourages departments and colleges throughout Rowan University to start a book study with their respective colleagues, to continually learn and engage in various topics surrounding DEI. Each month, we will be highlighting DEI Book Studies throughout campus!
College: College of Education
Facilitators: Drs. Valerie Lee & Kate Seltzer
Book: Reading, Writing, and Racism: Disrupting Whiteness in Teacher Education and in the Classroom by Bree Picower
Hosted by the College of Education and in partnership with Diversity in Action (DIA), faculty and staff read Reading, Writing, and Racism: Disrupting Whiteness in Teacher Education and in the Classroom by Bree Picower. We engaged in discussions examining our own racial identities and analyzed how Whiteness is embedded and reproduced in our programs. Picower also describes how Racial Justice Programs (RJPs) center anti-racism in preparing teachers. In our book club, we considered questions such as:
- How do racism and Whiteness show up in schools and curricula?
- How do our understandings of race impact our personal and professional decisions and how can those understandings be reframed?
- How can we move race from the margin to the center in our own settings (i.e., our department, program, etc.)?
