Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering named a national leader in inclusive education
The Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering at Rowan University has been recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in inclusive engineering education by the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Diversity Recognition Program.

During the inaugural cycle of the recognition program presented by ASEE, the College received bronze level recognition. Bronze was the highest level presented by the society. The award places Rowan Engineering among the top programs in the country in promoting diversity.

“This distinction recognizes our College of Engineering’s efforts to enroll, support, and strengthen services for underrepresented and underserved populations in engineering education, and affirms Rowan Engineering’s longstanding commitment to continuous improvement through practice, policy, and an inclusive culture,” said
Stephanie Farrell, interim dean of the College.

“We are excited to receive this recognition. Seeking to ensure greater access for diverse populations is a priority for us, and something that we have taken seriously. We are grateful that our efforts have been recognized by the sector.”

Rowan Engineering was recognized for having a breadth of diversity, equity, and inclusion programming designed to enroll and support traditionally underserved minority and socioeconomically diverse populations.These programs include K-12 outreach programs, novel early-college preparation programs, and articulation
agreements with regional high schools and community colleges.

Rowan Engineering’s diversity plan seeks to ensure equitable opportunities at the College for both faculty and students who come from diverse and underserved backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities, women, and representation from the LGBTQ communities. The College’s plan also commits to developing support
structures that promote inclusivity and student success.

In recognizing Rowan Engineering, the ASEE Diversity Recognition Program also endorsed the many initiatives in place University wide that address issues of diversity, engagement and inclusion. Among them:the new Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; the Office of Social Justice & Conflict Resolution;
inclusive programing from the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning; the Achieving Success Through Collaboration, Engagement and Determination (ASCEND) program; Flying First, which supports first-generation students and their parents; and Rowan Choice, which provides community college students with opportunities to live on campus and engage in student life.

“This recognition from ASEE is powerful and reflects the core commitments made by the leadership, faculty and staff of Rowan University to create a vibrant and inclusive learning community,” said Senior Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Monika Williams-Shealey. “I look forward to collaborating with engineering faculty as we continue to work together at Rowan to enhance and sustain equitable learning
opportunities for all of our students.”
