As we embarked on our 10-year reaccreditation self-study process, it became apparent that the rapid and comprehensive changes we have experienced over the last several years left our mission statement, which was developed in 2004, outdated and inadequate for conveying our institutional identity and mission. To address this, a Mission Statement Task Force was formed with representation from the Strategic Priorities Council, Presidents of the University Senate and AFT, a member of the Executive Cabinet, a Dean, the Senior VP for Advancement, RowanSOM, CMSRU, Student Government Association, and the Middle States Self-Study Faculty Co-Chair.
The goals for this process were to provide a streamlined framework to inspire and justify University initiatives and to provide an anchor for the upcoming self-study. The task force was not asked to establish a new mission, but rather to articulate the existing mission. As such, the members of the task force were not chosen to be representative and did not serve as advocates for their respective areas. The members worked as a team to analyze and reflect on source documents and compose language to reflect the commitments of the University in a fashion that is sufficiently grounded to guide decisions but is not overly granular or partisan.
The Rowan University Board of Trustees approved the Mission Statement on June 14, 2017.
