An Evening with Katie Barnes, Award-winning Journalist and Feature Writer for ESPN
Katie Barnes (they/them/their) is an award winning journalist at ESPN, covering culture, LGBTQ issues, women’s basketball, collegiate softball and women’s combat sports. Since joining ESPN in August 2015, Katie has written on myriad topics, such as transgender athletes, campus sexual assault, sports leagues incursion into public policy, racial justice, and Hollywood stunt doubles.
As a non-binary person of color, Katie is committed to using their voice, visibility and platforms to bring attention to the issues that marginalized people face. Topics Katie enjoys speaking about and does work around include:

Miss America 100 Years: Panel Discussion & Artifact Display
Prepare Great Women for the World.
Prepare the World for Great Women.
Please join us on Monday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. for a panel discussion about the Miss America Pageant, which is celebrating its 100 year anniversary, and Rowan’s collaboration with the pageant to digitize, preserve, and publicize its archives.
Panelists include:
- Ms. Alyssa Sullivan, ‘20, Miss New Jersey 2021
- Ms. Shantel Krebs, Chairperson of the Miss America Organization
- Dr. Katherine Turner, Lecturer, History Department, and Director of the Miss America Archives Project at Rowan University
Dr. Joanne Connor, the President’s Chief of Staff and Board of Trustees Liaison, will moderate the event.
You can attend this event in-person in Business Hall 104, with light refreshments, or virtually. The doors will open at 7:00 p.m and the panel discussion will begin at 7:15 pm. After the event, a digital archive of items will play for virtual guests, as in-person attendees can browse the in-person artifacts as well as the digital archive on the screen

Social Justice Speak Series Presents: Dr. Temple Grandin
Dr. Grandin will be virtual, however, participants can join us in person in Business 104, or register to attend the event virtually.
Dr. Temple Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University and has been a pioneer in improving the handling and welfare of farm animals. Temple was born an autistic child. At age 2 she had no speech. Mentored by her high school science teacher and aunt, Temple pursued a career as a scientists and livestock equipment designer. Dr. Grandin has received numerous awards including the Meritorious Achievement Award from the Livestock Conservation Institute, and received honorary doctorates from McGill University, University of Illinois, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duke. In 2015 she was given the Distinguished Service Award by the American Farm Bureau Federation. HBO premiered a movie about Temple’s early life and career with the livestock industry, & the movie received 7 Emmy awards, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award. In 2016, Temple was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
