Unstoppable Momentum

Rowan University continues to experience unprecedented momentum in virtually every aspect. We solve real-world problems, attract investors and ensure continuity and progress for our academic community and our partners—regardless of obstacles and distractions.

In typical times—and over many decades—earning such accolades could be a reasonable accomplishment for a dynamic university. But in barely 10 years? And with two of those during a global pandemic?

Drawing on institutional agility, strength and vision that continue to shape its future, Rowan University has experienced tremendous growth and change. In the short but stunning period:

  • Enrollment nearly doubled to 22,000
  • Powerful partnerships grew, including a $426 million redevelopment project and an $85 million affiliation with Virtua Health
  • Fundraising galvanized more than 22,000 donors to give more than $120 million in the most recent campaign
  • Agility and capacity to meet needs made Rowan one of only two institutions in the nation with medical schools granting M.D. and D.O. degrees, and with a School of Veterinary Medicine planned to open in 2025
  • $1.7 billion in construction and design projects on and around Rowan campuses built new academic, research and clinical facilities, plus other private and public development

And there’s so much more, all focused on making a difference in people’s lives through education, innovation and health care.

Innovation

Children affected by a fatal genetic disorder called Canavan disease are seeing their conditions improve with a first-of-its kind breakthrough treatment now in human clinical trials. The revolutionary gene therapy is based on a lifetime of research by Dr. Paola Leone at the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.

A diagnostic test for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease using just a drop of blood is possible, due to the work of Rowan University’s Dr. Robert Nagele. His team’s discovery that all people have thousands of autoantibodies that clear cell and tissue debris from their blood could lead to the early detection of many diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

Physicians look at MRI images of the brain to spot the growth of tumors, but artificial intelligence technology developed by Dr. Nidhal Bouaynaya and her research partners now means a computer can detect and map changes as much as three years’ earlier than before. One day, that could revolutionize the diagnosis of brain tumors.

Vision

In the muck of a former marl quarry, world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Ken Lacovara saw great potential for its hidden trove of marine and terrestrial fossils. Rowan University could see it, too. Today, construction is underway on the Jean & Ric Edelman Fossil Park Museum, a $73 million project expected to draw 200,000 visitors annually.

Over the last decade, Rowan University became one of three universities in the nation to offer the M.D. and D.O. degrees, helping to fill the physician shortage. By 2025, when the School of Veterinary Medicine welcomes its first class, Rowan will be one of just two institutions that also train the next generation of veterinarians.

To improve community health and educational opportunities in southern New Jersey, Rowan is expanding its partnership with the area’s largest health system. The new Virtua Health College of Medicine & Health Sciences will lead to better care, better training and better treatments—benefiting patients, students and the practice of medicine.

Ambition

Rowan University faculty and students aim high—really high.

Geologist Dr. Harold Connolly is helping to lead research on material collected from Bennu, an asteroid hurtling through space 200 million miles from Earth.

Amid Central Asia's shifting political winds, alumna Katherine Trauger is at Oxford University, studying human rights development in former Soviet republics, as Russia threatens their independence.

And three Rowan engineers are entertaining audiences worldwide with drone swarms 30 stories high, flown in brilliant coordination with their own proprietary technology.
