Who may participate in the Rowan University Student Scholars Symposium?
The criteria for participation in the Student Scholars Symposium are the following:

  • The work presented represents Rowan undergraduate or graduate student activity that meets at least one of the following criteria:
    • the work presented is primary research;  or
    • the work is a literature review that includes a novel hypothesis-driven analysis arising from the review (abstracts of this type must clearly indicate the novel analysis); or
    • the work presented is original creative activity; or
    • the work presented is original entrepreneurship.
  • A Rowan student (undergraduate or graduate) is the presenting author (multiple presenting student authors are welcome);
  • Some significant portion of the presented work has been carried out during 12 months preceding the Symposium;
  • The location where the presented work was carried out is not important (work that was done on-campus or off-campus by Rowan students is eligible);
  • An abstract is submitted as described in the call for abstracts by the posted deadline;
  • The presentation will be in the format of a poster similar to what is presented at various scholarly and professional conferences or in the case of certain disciplines, a public reading or performance by the submitting student may take place.  A reading or performance presentation will be three minutes in length and will be presented in a session moderated by a convenor.  Readers / performers may also present a poster.

May non-Rowan students present at the STEM Symposium?
We recognize that in some cases, students from outside Rowan University may work with Rowan faculty on research projects. In these instances, non-Rowan students may present at the Symposium as co-author(s) with a Rowan student. Also, Rowan students who have worked on their projects during the allowable timeframe but who have since graduated are eligible to present at the Student Scholars Symposium.
Students enrolled at SOM, GSBS, and CMSRU are considered Rowan students and we encourage their participation in the Student Scholars Symposium.

Do I have to be an undergraduate to present at the Student Scholars Symposium?
The Student Scholars Symposium has never been limited to just undergraduate students. Rowan University students at all levels and from all campuses may present their research at the Symposium.

May faculty be listed as Symposium authors?
Rowan faculty may be listed among the authors on Student Scholars Symposium presentations, but it is expected that students will be the submitters and be the primary presenters. Faculty are not required to be listed as presentation co-authors, although a faculty member must be designated as a "faculty sponsor" by the student submitting the abstract.

May non-Rowan personnel be listed as Symposium authors?
Non-Rowan personnel may be listed among the authors on Student Scholars Symposium presentations, but it is expected that students will be the submitters and be the primary presenters.

May students have more than one presentation at the Symposium?
Yes, although our ability to place the separate presentations into different sessions or to place two posters next to each other is sometimes limited. To maximize your chances of having your presentations scheduled in a manner that is best for you, be sure to list your special requirements and circumstances on the appropriate screen when you are preparing your abstract in the Online Submission System.
