Title VI: Student Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation

Student Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation

Our social media platforms have been rightfully flooded with concerns about racist and offensive postings by Rowan students on their personal accounts. While federal privacy laws prohibit the University from discussing student matters publicly, we are evaluating each reported incident to determine whether these incidents are subject to discipline under our Student Code of Conduct or whether they are incidents that are protected by freedom of speech. In addition, we are following up with education and targeted outreach with the goal of getting the individuals involved to understand why the language is not acceptable and not in line with our vision and values. Racism has no place here at Rowan and every student deserves to feel safe on our campus. Thank you for your activism and for continuing to shine a light on wrongdoing.

Rowan University enforces a no tolerance policy in regards to an incident of discrimination, harassment and retaliation. The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Office of Student Equity & Compliance (OSEC), located in Savitz Hall, Rm 203, provides students support and protection under Title VI.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects people from discrimination based on race, color or national origin in programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Title VI states that:

“No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the United States Department of Education are covered by Title VI.
