In 1934, the Sei Yu Kei Literary Society sponsored the seventh annual Oratorical Contest. Dominick Garofalo's essay, "The Plight of the South Jersey Truck Farmer," won the first place prize of $7.50. The Great Depression decimated college enrollment as many young men and women opted to work on family farms, which contributed to a shortage of rural teachers.
