Drawn from Rowan University Art Gallery's growing permanent collection, Variations on a Theme features a selection of works that were inspired by the art of the past. Some pay homage to celebrated artists, while others reconfigure and challenge the traditional canon of art history. These recent variations on established themes and well-known works of art are accompanied by illustrations of the objects they honor and critique. In the nearby installation of The Sister Chapel, the monumental portraits of Artemisia Gentileschi and Frida Kahlo were similarly inspired by earlier images.

Exhibited in Variations on a Theme are works by Dotty Attie, Elizabeth Bisbing, Marjorie Kramer, Marion Pinto, Stephanie Rauschenbusch, Susan Sills, Sylvia Sleigh, and Audrey Ushenko.
