Job Description: Legislative Intern
Summary:
The Legislative Intern will assist the Chief of Staff with legislative research projects, hearings, and other substantive assignments and administrative tasks. Previous interns have worked on a variety of issues, including environmental, finance, and health legislation.
The position requires a highly organized individual with a keen attention to detail and strong work ethic, and proven ability to excel in a fast-paced environment. Our team values strong written and oral communication skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to take initiative. Residing in the 36th legislative district and fluency in Spanish is a plus. Reports To: Chief of Staff
Essential Job Functions:
- Monitor legislative activity that may have a direct impact on the 36th legislative district.
- Assist with overseeing the progression of bills with which the Assemblyman is involved as they move from committee to the floor.
- Write and review legislative memos.
- Maintain up-to-date status reports on all legislation affecting the district, legislation in which the Assemblyman is a principal sponsor, or legislation on which the Assemblyman is a co-sponsor.
- Recommend co-sponsorships of legislation to the Assemblyman.
- Draft responses to constituent inquiries via e-mail, written correspondence and perform updates to existing databases.
- Manage district and state-wide events in conjunction with the Communications Director.
- Perform special projects assigned by the Assemblyman and/or Chief of Staff.
- Safeguard confidentiality of office files and information received.
- Respond to incoming telephone calls and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to deal with conflicts, confrontations, disagreements in a positive manner.
- Participates in problem-solving and decision-making.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to present and express information clearly and concisely in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to research and analyze relevant constituent issues, legislation, statutes and other related materials.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently under time constraints.
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively.
- Ability to exercise professional judgment and maintain confidentiality.
- Must be proficient with all aspects of Microsoft Office.
