FAQ’s for Leave of Absence

What is a leave of absence?
A leave of absence is intended for Rowan University matriculated undergraduate students who plan to take a leave from the university for up to four consecutive semesters. Students must apply for a Leave of Absence through the Office of Academic Transition and Support Programs.
 
Matriculated graduate level and post bac students do not take leaves; instead, they simply must complete their program within the time limits established for their particular program. It is strongly recommended that these students contact Rowan Global (globalstudent@rowan.edu) to notify them of their plan to temporarily halt their enrollment, and to ask any questions they might have about possible return dates and/or time limt questions. 
 
Non-matriculated students also do not take leaves; instead, they continue coursework until they have reached the maximum enrollment limit. After that, matriculation in a program is required for continued enrollment. 
 
What is a semester/term withdrawal?
A semester/term withdrawal occurs when a student withdraws from all classes within a current semester but still plan to return to the Univeristy in future terms. Students must complete an "All Enrollment Withdraw Form". The form ans associated policy/process may be reviewed at https://sites.rowan.edu/registrar/_docs/all-enrollment-withdrawal-form.pdf. What is a university withdrawal?
A university withdrawal occurs when a student withdraws from all classes within a current and any future (if applicable) semester because they do not plan to return to the University. How long can an undergraduate student be out on a leave of absence?
Students may apply for a leave of absence for a period of up to four consecutive semesters. Students who fail to register for the fifth consecutive semester will lose their matriculated status and will need to apply for Re-Enrollment, www.rowan.edu/reenroll
 
Can a leave of absence request be submitted for a semester in which a student is currently taking classes?
After the full term late drop/add period for the term in question, students are not eligible to apply for a leave of absence for the current term if they are enrolled in coursework for that same term. If you are unsure how to proceed in regards to your coursework (current or future) please contact your Academic Advisor. During the regular or late drop/add period, students should first apply for and receive approval for a leave of absence. If approved, the Office of Academic Transition and Support Programs will forward that approval to the Office of the University Registrar, who will process the leave and drop current coursework (if applicable).
 
How can an undergraduate student apply for a leave of absence?
Undergraduate students may apply for a leave of absence by filling out the Leave of Absence Request Form They will then be contacted by the Degree Completion Specialist.
 
How can an undergraduate student return from leave of absence?
Rowan University matriculated undergraduate students who are currently on a leave of absence (up to four consecutive semesters) and are interested in returning to Rowan University can return one of the followings ways:
  • Fill out the Return from Leave of Absence Request Form. 
  • Visit the Registrars’ Office located on the first floor of Savitz hall and requested to be removed from Leave of Absence in person.
What happens to my financial aid if I go on a leave of absence?
Going on a leave of absence could result in significant financial implications. It is highly recommended that students contact the Financial Aid Office in regards to this question. They can be reached at 856-256-4250 or via email, financialaid@rowan.edu.
