Health Insurance Frequently Asked Questions


Who is eligible for student health insurance?

  • All full-time matriculated undergraduate students and certification students enrolled in 12 or more credits;
  • All full-time matriculated graduate students enrolled in 9 or more credits;
  • All full-time Rowan SOM students, all full-time Postdoctoral Fellow Students and part-time Rowan SOM Students;
  • All full-time and part-time matriculated Rowan University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences students; and
  • All full-time medical students and any student enrolled in a CMSRU approved alternate program of study.

How can a student waive the health insurance?

To waive the Rowan University insurance coverage, follow the steps provided below:
  • Go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com.
  • Select "Rowan University" from the drop down menu and then select the “View your school” button.
  • Select the “Enroll/Waive” button in the navigation menu located on the left side of the webpage.
  • Review the information on the page and then select the “Enroll/Waive” button.
  • Select appropriate area of study from the drop down menu.
  • Enter your student ID and date of birth and click on “Get Started”.

What is the waiver criteria?

  • In order to opt out of the Rowan University Health Insurance Plan, the student must agree to maintain health insurance coverage throughout the entire academic year.  Additionally, the insurance plan must provide in-patient and out-patient coverage in the Southern New Jersey Region.  (NOTE:  CMSRU students' insurance plans must provide in-patient and out-patient coverage in the Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia Metropolitan Region.)

What happens if the student waives the insurance plan and then loses coverage?

  • Students who did not enroll themselves during the open enrollment period may be able to enroll in the policy if they experience a Qualifying Life Event.  Students should contact Aetna Student Health at 1-877-480-4161 within 31 days of their loss of coverage.

Can a student enroll and use the insurance prior to the waiver deadline?

  • If a student needs to utilize the insurance prior to the final enrollment file being submitted to Aetna, they may do so by following the instructions provided below:

    • Go to  www.aetnastudenthealth.com.
    • Select "Rowan University" from the drop down menu and then select the “View your school” button.
    • Review the information on the page and then select the “Enroll/Waive” button.
    • Select the “Enroll/Waive” button in the navigation menu located on the left side of the webpage.
    • Select area of study from the drop down menu.
    • Enter your student ID and date of birth and click on “Get Started”.
    • Select the “Enroll” button located below the waiver section of the web page.
    • Select the plan and enter your personal information and select “Submit”.


How does a student request an insurance card?

  • Once enrolled, students may get their insurance card by visiting the Aetna website www.aetnastudenthealth.com. Click on the “Get your ID card” button located toward the right side of the page.  Enter your student ID and date of birth and select “Submit”.
